| Here at Brown we use the House model for grouping students into smaller learning communities. Smaller learning communities are shown to improve student learning and help foster better connections between students and teachers. There are three houses at Brown Middle School which are named after major rivers in Oregon. The Willamette house is the smallest house and is located on the south side of the building in red hall. Rogue house is the second largest house in the building and located in blue and green hall. Nehalem is the largest house in the building and located mostly in yellow hall. Students are not grouped in house by ability, it is simply chance that dictates what house a student belongs to. Using the house model does require more work for scheduling students but provides students a connection to a school 1/3 of the size or Brown's total population. |
