Dear Evergreen Community,
I hope this letter finds you feeling good about your child's 1st semester this school year. We love our Evergreen students and are enjoying assisting them as they navigate through their middle school years and into young adulthood. It is hard to believe that our 7th graders are a semester away from being 8th graders and that our current 8th graders are a semester away from beginning high school!
Our second semester is beginning with some administrative personnel changes. It is with mixed emotions that I announce that our current Assistant Principal, Linda Harrington, will be going to half time duty for the remainder of this year as she begins her new journey as the principal of Hillsboro's new online school. The online school will be up and running by the fall of next school year. Congratulations Linda! This online school will expand options for H.S.D. students and ultimately bolster district revenue. There will be more details to come this spring regarding the online program.
In order to absorb the loss of Linda to a 1/2 time status, we are fortunate to add the talents of Sarah Turner. Ms. Turner will be our interim 1/2 time assistant principal, and job share with Linda for the remainder of this year. Ms. Turner has worked in the district for 6 years in a variety of capacities. Her eclectic background and fun high-energy personality, will be a great addition to Evergreen. Welcome Ms. Turner!
In the case that more academic or social support is needed for your student, Evergreen has several options that are available to address their academic and/or social challenges. These opportunities are outlined below in this letter. Our website http://hsd.k12.or.us/evergreen is also a good resource for parents as it includes information regarding daily operations, events, announcements and general happenings at Evergreen.
The Homework Zone is offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays after school at 3:30 pm in the Library. This provides an excellent opportunity for your student to do homework, as well as having access to math assistance. The next session will begin February 7th and is free. Space is limited and is available on a first come-first serve basis. Registration packets are available in the main office. Students participating in The Homework Zone will have access to the activity bus for transportation home from school. We are also offering a Math Tutoring class on Mondays and Wednesdays at 3:30 pm, providing instructional support and help with developing strategies needed to be more successful in mathematics. The next session will begin March 5 and has 25 openings. The fee is $40. Registration forms are available in the front office.
Evergreen staff members, with the support of Hillsboro Parks and Recreation, will also be offering various enrichment clubs during the 2nd semester. Some of these classes include: Chess Club, Running Club, Zumba Fitness Club, Comic Book Reading and Art Club, Hunger Games Reading Club, Mural Art Club, Gamers Club and the Dog Club. Click here to view all The Youth Zone offerings at the Hillsboro Park and Recreation website.
We hope you will take advantage of one or more of the aforementioned opportunities. Please contact your child’s counselor (Ms. Margaret Duarte - 8th Grade, Mr. Jason Dortch - 7th Grade) at 503-844-1400 for more information on academic or social assistance for your student.
Respectfully,
